This is a new series where I talk about the guys I've dealt. Today, I talk about Chance Adams.
Dealt to SEA for:
LHP Braxton Garrett, 2018 Padres 2nd, and 2018 6th
Chance came over during the famous ODC trading day where seemingly a million trades got done in the middle of a random day. Mostly, it was because I started to sell all my players at once as a new owner.
It started when I dealt JT Realmuto for Tim Anderson to Jeff, who I then flipped to Noah for Chance Adams and Delvin Perez*. Chance Adams was a guy I really liked all along, as he has blossomed from a reliever to a starter in the Yankees system. He combines a lively mid 90's fastball, his best pitch, along with a hard mid 80's slider. His change is more or less average, and his control is inconsistent, but it's improved a lot.
Initially, I didn't want to move Chance because A)He's murdering AAA at this point and B) He has two legitimate out pitches in his slider and fastball and C) The Yankees need a better starter than Cessa. Most scouting expert have pegged him as a #3 guy, which sells him a bit short given his outstanding peripherals in AAA (9.7 K's/9 and 3.7 BB's/9).
The only red flag I've noticed in Chance's numbers is his groundball rate at AAA, which is around 42%. That's really low, and very uncommon for a highly ranked SP prospect. It might have to do with his fastball, which doesn't have the downward plane you would like in most guys. It's my hunch that's the reason the Yankees have not called him up just yet -- flyball guys don't play well at Yankee Stadium (e.g. Phil Hughes, Pineda). So I think, given his new status as a top 50 prospect in baseball juxtaposed with his lack of suitability in Yankee Stadium, Chance is going to get dealt this winter for another established pitcher on the block. It would, in all honestly be for the best. Put him in a pitcher friendly NL park, and he might be a borderline elite fantasy pitcher in the very near future.
*Perez was later flipped for Oscar de La Cruz and the Tor 2018 1st.
