The Detroit Tigers have announced that they plan to select Florida catcher Mike Zunino with the #1 pick in this June's draft. At a news conference Wednesday afternoon, Tigers GM Alex Stern said of Zunino, "He has a great all-around game. He's a good game caller, plays above-average defense, and has an excellent bat. We expect that Zunino won't need much seasoning in the minors before he's ready to take over as our everyday catcher in the big leagues. Barring his draft stock dramatically falling between now and June, he'll be our pick."
Were something to happen to Zunino that changes the Tigers mind, they would likely look at LSU right-hander Kevin Gausman or Georgia high school outfielder Byron Buxton.
