Every Friday of the 2018 year OakInc will be posting the ODC Week in review, summarizing any moves made and notable chat topics for that week.
TRADES: The first trade of the 2018 year was a doozy by yours truly and Nick, with Oakland receiving 1B/LF Ian Desmond and trading away future ace Marco Gonzales and Hernan Perez. Later that night in separate deals Oakland sent Jonathan Villar (to CHC) and Daniel Mengden (to KC) for Mike Zunino and Johan Camargo. When Oakland traded for Camargo they thought he was 2B eligible, which he is not, but we'll get to that later.
Later that night Psych continued with his weird rebuild by getting younger and trading Robinson Cano for Ian Kinsler and 2 mid round picks.
The next day Oakland traded Johan Camargo and Welington Castillo to Psych for Ian Kinsler. They did this because earlier that day they discovered that Johan Camargo was in fact not a 2B and actually 3B/SS eligible, so they overpaid for another 33 year old.
BEEF OF THE WEEK: The next night the Cubs continued to try to fix the mess Psych left him with by trading SP Jon Lester and SS Kevin Maitan to the Tigers for LF Willie Calhoun, which led to our BEEF OF THE WEEK, as in chat former Cubs gm Gregory Psych said "I can't look at this guys trades anymore" which led to current GM Slaw giving Psych a weird insult calling him "Billy Beane Jr.". I didn't get it, but it wasn't a great week for beefs. The trade for what it's worth made sense for both sides. Tigers needed another 30-something expensive SP to go with Adam Wainwright, Zack Greinke, and Johnny Cueto and the Cubs needed to get rid of that contract.
Later that night Jack proclaimed Jackie Bradley to be the best CF in the AL East and then traded him to Michael for Joe Ross and Phillip Ervin literally no more than 5 minutes later. The trade itself was fine almost definitely a win for Michael with Joe Ross's arm falling off last season, and Michael needing a CF due to Delino Deshileds having an unknown role but the weirdest part about this trade was the acceptance by Jack in which he said "I accept, Natty would do it and Phil Ervin is in my mind Jackie Bradley Jr jr." Phillip Ervin had a .709 OPS last season in 100 games at AAA. Phillip Ervin is 25 years old and has no role in the Reds future and was predominantly a left fielder last season. Him and Jackie Bradley literally have nothing in common except for being black outfielders. It'd be like comparing Manny Machado and Dixon Machado.
A slow Wednesday saw just two trades with both including Oakland. In one Oakland traded 3 young relievers for Closer Sean Doolittle and in the other it was a picks for cap trade with hemmons.
It looked like we'd get a slow end to the week before Nick decided to get rid of his middle infielders, getting rid of two talented, but probably overpaid players in Daniel Murphy and Troy Tulowitzki and in return received Mitch Haniger. Out of the big trades this week this was probably my favorite trade in the sense that it made perfect sense for both teams. With Mitch Haniger coming off a great rookie season with 16 HRs and a .843 OPS in the 96 games he played.
BLOCKBUSTER OF THE WEEK: Kevin traded Jose Ramirez to the Royals (who don't mak good trades only big onez) for Nick Williams and a prospect package headlined by Alex Verdugo. I think Brandon ends up winning this one due to Ramirez's great contract and the Phillies crowded outfield, but it makes sense for Kevin as he probably wasn't contending this year, although I do think he could've won the NL East if he had gone for MLB pieces for Ramirez.
MAXINGS¹ : In a mostly uninteresting trade with OF Zack Granite going to the Yankees for woman beating America hating catcher Bruce Maxwell we got our MAXING OF THE WEEK, (it wasn't a great week for maxing), in the response Justin gave a 5/10 on the Max scale in saying "I've been trying to get a hold of Granite for a while now and I'm not losing that much here. Stevenson has similar skills but is facing a more crowded OF situation in DC, and Maxwell isn't needed anymore with Barnes establishing himself as a clear starter." Not great, but like I said, not a great week for maxings.
THIS WEEK IN CHAT: Mostly a boring chat week as the RuleV started and we here at OakInc have no interest in prospects and think the ruleV is a sham, (reminder the player you drafted was actually #24,429 on Justins draft board), but that and Forbzs various other fantasy leagues were the main topics in chat. Bryan continued not making a ton of sense when trying to go at Brandon for whatever reason. Also in case you forgot Bum and Baez are OTB.
BEST TEAM OF THE WEEK: New York Yankees for drafting the only good players in the RuleV, just kidding, it's the White Sox for giving up practically nothing for a really nice CF in Jackie Bradley Jr and continuing to add to a really deep lineup.
WORST TEAM OF THE WEEK: Colorado Rockies, for making no moves and continuing to stand pat at 26M over cap.
¹ Maxing-The act of making a trade with someone and then completely slandering the player you traded away. (http://ondeckcircle.proboards.com/thread/10726/cin-hou)
