With the deadline ten days away, we could see plenty of deals in the next few days. Here are just a few ideas:
Mariners trade Nick Markakis to Pirates for Kike Hernandez, Matt Wieters, and Tyson Miller
The Pirates are in dire need of a bat or three for the playoffs. They really stand to improve the most in RF, where they currently have Swiss army knife Kike Hernandez. The Mariners would be well served to add a few players at C and 2B who could help them next season, as well as a low-minors pitcher performing well.
Maybe Seattle will just keep Markakis for a potential playoff run and a compensatory pick, but they are going to be strong again next season, so the players may be more important for them. Maybe the Mariners could send Michael Brantley as well and get an even better return.
Rangers trade Carlos Carrasco to Cubs for Willie Calhoun, Mitch Keller, and Luke Weaver
The ODC version of a Chris Archer deal, except Cookie is definitely better than Archer. The Cubs need a pitcher behind Sale pretty badly. Their offense wouldn't miss Calhoun much, and although Keller and Weaver could be rotation mainstays longterm, neither is helping the Cubs win a World Series right now. Yes, it's a high price to pay, but nobody the Cubs are trading is a guaranteed impact player, and they really should try to win while Trout and Sale are in their primes.
Besides, it will probably take a great deal to convince Bill to fully start a rebuild. The Rangers are close enough to competing to reasonably want to keep Carrasco, but I think the Segura trade signals his wishes to push his window back a few seasons. In that case, Cookie should be off this team by Opening Day 2019.
Diamondbacks trade Anthony Rendon to Astros for Edwin Encarnacion and Brad Peacock
Pretty simple deal. The Astros need a third baseman now. The D-Backs are on the outside of the playoffs looking in, but they're gonna compete again next season. Edwin Encarnacion is a good start, since Hemmons will want to compete again in 2019, but knowing him it just won't be enough. Peacock isn't essential to Max's team, but he would be another pretty nice arm for Jason.
Nationals trade Gerrit Cole to Twins for Jose Martinez
The best team in ODC could definitely use a pitcher. I thought about sending back Chad Green since the Twins can really absorb a bullpen blow and Green isn't as sharp this season, but Martinez makes more sense as he won't help Minnesota much at all this season. Martinez is a good hitter, and could make an impact as soon as next season, but he is older and doesn't really fill any role on the Twins in 2018 or 2019. However, he provides good upside and a nice 1B replacement for Abreu next season.
Still need homes:
Michael Brantley (SEA)
Didi Gregorius (ARZ)
Bryce Harper? (WAS)
