How each team in contention did at or preceding the deadline.
San Francisco Giants:
Deadline Moves:
Traded for: Evan Gattis, Ian Desmond, Adam Jones, Seth Lugo, Leonys Martin
Traded Away: Ryan Yarbrough, CJ Cron, Andrew Toles, Adalberto Mondesi, 2019 4th and 6th round picks
Although the current NL West leader stayed quiet in yesterdays true deadline, he made some buyers moves that have already helped him, trading for possibly the best catcher in here in Evan Gattis, along with solid producers in Adam Jones and Ian Desmond. Lugo and Martin are moreso depth pieces, but at a deadline where most NL Contenders stayed quiet, Paulie made the moves too establish himself as the #2 seed in the NL, and guaranteeing himself against the winner of the atrocity that is the NL East. The Desmond contract is the only thing that keeps this from an A+.
Grade: A-
Chicago Cubs:
Deadline Moves:
Traded for: Bud Norris, Kyle Higashioka, Gio Brusa
Traded Away: Jorge Ona, Victor Vargas, Juan De Leon
*Aggressively points to the lack of quite literally any RF in his lineup right now* I mean the Norris move is solid and gives him a closer that he needs to pick up categories during the regular season, but I mean it's going to be hard to make a significant run in the playoffs running one man short in your lineup, with the latest news on Soler being that his earliest return is late August I just don't get at least getting someone who helps you at something in RF. Also trading for one closer isn't gonna do a lot when come playoff time you're going to be going against teams that have 2 or 3 closers.
Grade: D
New York Mets:
Deadline Moves:
Traded for: Matt Davidson, Travis Jankowski, 2020 2nd, 2020 7th, Robert Gsellman, Tanner Roark
Traded Away: Keynan Middleton, Joe Ross, Wade Leblanc, Felix Pena, Randy Rosario, Jorge Polanco
Jacks probably gonna win the NL East and then get smoked in the first round, but he did do a solid job not getting things that could help him. Gsellman and Jankowski should help in specific categories, and Roark is a fine mid rotation guy, but a bit surprising he didn't move Barreto for something to help him down the stretch
Grade: B-
Washington Nationals:
Deadline Moves:
Traded for: 2019 1st, 2020 1sts-7ths Bryce Harper, Alex Lange, Brent Rooker, Wily Peralta, Cody Allen, Derek Dietrich
Traded Away: Yoshihira Hirano, Charlie Culberson, Adam Warren, Christian Yelich, Jonathan Holder, Stephen Strasburg
I mean sure. This is such a weird collection of names, but from just a this year perspective he got a great hitter in Bryce Harper. Dietrich is multi eligible and has had a good year, Peralta certainly exists, and the idea of Cody Allen is probably more valuable than his production, but Hirano and Yelich are the only big names he gave up that will make contributions this year so overall I think he did fine.
Grade: C
Pittsburgh Pirates:
Deadline Moves:
Traded for: Willson Contreras, Stephen Strasburg, Joe Mauer, Justin Wilson, Jon Gray, Carlos Correa, Nick Vincent
Traded away: Nomar Mazara, Daulton Varsho, Nate Eovaldi, 2020 1st, Josh Breaux, Kevin Cron, Tyson Miller, Landon Marceaux, Tommy Doyle, Jack Herman, 2020 4th, Stephen Piscotty, Corey Seager, Nick Pratto, 2018 1st
This was fairly close to a perfect trade season for Caleb. Selling high on Mazara to get an underperforming Contreras was a great move. Mauer and Wilson are great as cheap depth and if someone gets injured are perfectly fine to put in a lineup. Another Underperforming guy in Jon Gray has already paid dividends for Caleb and the Carlos Correa trade was huge. The only drawback is the lack of moving for a closer, but when you have zero it is hard to trade for enough to have a playoff caliber amount of saves, so he decided to just go with a lineup that's better than anybody elses. This was strong.
Grade: A+
Baltimore Orioles:
Deadline Moves:
Traded For: Carlos Gonzalez
Traded Away: James Shields
With Solarte, Nate Jones, Danny Salazar, Hunter Strickland, and Brandon Mccarthy all hurt right now making a few moves wouldn't have hurt, but he pretty much has the AL East locked up and although I would have done more there's not a ton of movable assets that aren't contributing for him as is. Cargo has gotten hot of late too which has helped.
Grade: C+
Minnesota Twins:
Deadline Moves:
Traded For: Brandon Kintzler, Wade Leblanc, Edwin Diaz
Traded Away: 2019 3rd 2020 6th, 2020 7th, 2019 1st, Carson Kelly, Keone Kela
Colome and Kela losing their closing roles so Patty traded for the best closer in here. Replacing Kela with Kintzler isn't awful and Leblanc has put together a fine season. Would have liked to seen a Salvador Perez sized catcher move, but Ianetta isn't awful there.
Grade: B+
Arizona Diamondbacks:
Traded for: Devin Mesoraco, Austin Meadows
Traded Away: 2019 4th, Andrew Heaney
Hemmons is 16 games back of the second with two weeks left and will now lose the following players for nothing but a comp pick
Drew Butera, Didi Gregorius, Anthony Rendon, Sean Rodriguez, Andrew Mccutchen, Dan Straily, Hector Santiago, Luke Gregerson, Tyler Clippard
What an idiot
Grade: F
Chicago White Sox:
Traded For: Nate Eovaldi, Yusmerio Petit, Jon Jay, 2020 5th, Jose Bautista, Sean Doolittle, Josh Reddick
Traded Away: Kenta Maeda, 2020 6th, Tommy La Stella, Edwin Encarnacion, Juan Nicasio, Delino Deshields, Isiah Falefa, Doug Fister, Cody Allen
Not a lot of weaknesses on this team. Trading Encarnacion sorta hurts, but when he's your backup 1B to Freddie Freeman it's not too bad. Mike really needs Donaldson and Pham back to make a run come playoff time, but adding Doolittle to that bullpen when he comes back could give him the best pitching staff in the AL.
Grade: B
Elijah made a bunch of moves and they're all fine but he'll lose in the first round anyway
