Luis Urias, 2B, San Diego Padres, Grade B+: Signed out of Mexico in 2013, hit .296/.398/.447 in Triple-A at age 21; 30 doubles, eight homers; hit .208 in 48 MLB AB but he’s better than that; solid doubles power with good eye at the plate, should provide plenty of OBP; very reliable with the glove at second; ready for the job; ETA 2019.
Hunter Greene, RHP, Grade B+: Age 19, first round pick in 2017 from high school in California; got off to a slow start in Low-A, overall numbers were 4.48 ERA in 68 innings, 89/23 K/BB but in his last 10 starts he posted a 2.68 ERA in 47 innings, 57/11 K/BB with just 32 hits; season ended early with elbow strain; to this point Tommy John has been avoided and current reports on rehab are very positive, supposed to be full strength by spring; when healthy shows 96-101 MPH fastball and made progress refining slider and change-up; I think the last 10 starts are the real Greene and my only concern is the elbow; number one starter potential; ETA late 2020 assuming good health.
Logan Allen, LHP, San Diego Padres, Grade B+: Age 21, 2.54 ERA in 149 innings, 151/51 K/BB in Double-A/Triple-A; low-90s fastball, very good change-up, breaking stuff decent by consensus but still seems underrated to me; viewed as possible No. 4 starter by many but that may be selling him short; ETA 2019.
Wander Javier, SS, Grade B: Age 19, signed for $4,000,000 in 2015 from Dominican Republic; hit .299/.383/.471 in the Appalachian League in 2017 but missed all of 2018 with shoulder injury; obviously we’re in wait-and-see mode with this one; same grade as last year; high ceiling but we need to see how he fares against full-season pitching. ETA 2022?
Joey Wentz, LHP, Grade B: Age 21, comp round pick in 2016 from high school in Kansas, limited to 67 innings by nagging injuries but pitched well when healthy, 2.28 ERA with 53/24 K/BB, 49 hits in High-A; like Muller he has a respectable low-90s fastball and an assortment of classic southpaw secondaries; K-rate declined this year which bears watching; ETA 2020.
Tristan Beck, RHP, Grade B-/B: Age 22, fourth round pick in 2018 out of Stanford, threw 4.2 innings without allowing a run in rookie ball; college career was marred by injuries but effective when healthy with low-90s fastball, slightly above-average curve, and plus change-up; relatively polished and could move quickly through the system if he manages a pro workload successfully; ETA 2021.
Miguel Vargas, 3B, Grade B-: Age 18, signed out of Cuba in 2017, hit .394/.447/.596 in 94 at-bats in Pioneer League, then .213/.307/.253 in 75 at-bats in Low-A; combined for 23 walks, 36 strikeouts in 200 at-bats; missed two seasons during defection process so he had some rust to work off; impressed PL observers with pure hitting skills and power potential; defense needs work but the bat is promising and has breakthrough potential; ETA 2022.
Jose Israel Garcia, SS, Grade C+: Age 20, Cuban, signed for $5,000,000 in 2017 plus another $5,000,000 in bonus penalties; hit .245/.290/.344 with six homers, 13 steals, 19 walks, 112 strikeouts in 482 at-bats in Low-A; Midwest League sources liked athleticism and overall tools, speed, wiry strength and overall projection but had serious questions about over-aggressive offensive approach and poor strike zone feel; hit better as the season progressed and he made adjustments, .277/..322/.398 in last 65 games; high ceiling but needs polish; ETA 2022.
Cadyn Grenier, SS, Grade C+: Age 22, comp round pick in 2018 from Oregon State, jumped to Low-A and hit just .216/.297/.332 in 162 at-bats; best-known for excellent defense, bat showed signs of significant improvement in college but this didn’t carry forward into pro ball; needs to get stronger or at least cut down on higher-than-expected strikeout rate; ETA 2021.
Missing: Anthony Banda, Miguel Vargas, Tyler Phillips, Luis Rengifo, Michal Baez, Francisco Morales, Gregory Soto, Logan Shore, Cory Abbott
