Seattle Mariners 2019 Mid Season Grades
C - JT Realmuto Grade B
AB R HR RBI SB AVG OBP SLG GP
308 55 10 42 4 .273 .328 .438 85
I might be being a little hard on his grade but most of theose good stats he put up was when he was with Boston. After acquiring Realmuto he seemed to be in a slump that took a while for him to climb out of. Just need him to continue being a solid bat at catcher for the second half of the season.
1B - Eric Thames Grade: B
AB R HR RBI SB AVG OBP SLG GP
202 35 13 36 2 .257 .369 .510 82
Started out with Eric Hosmer but traded him to Boston. Ended up trading for Eric Thames who is putting together a solid season, albeit his AB’s are as consistent as I would like. Hoping he stays consistent down the stretch while my team gets healthy.
2B - Joey Wendle/Daniel Descalso Grade: F
AB R HR RBI SB AVG OBP SLG GP
90 8 0 6 6 .200 .277 .256 30
Wendle was off to a great start and but ended up getting hit in the wrist, which sidelined him for around 6 weeks. Descalso filled in and proceeded to be terrible for most of his starts for me. Almedys Diaz filled in nicely until a nagging hamstring injury forced me to go back to Descalso, who was again, a trainwreck. Wendle came back from the injury as cold as ice but has slowly started to warm up. His only bright spot since his return has been a few clutch SB’s. I need him to stay healthy and start hitting to bring my productivity at 2B up to a respectable level.
SS - Francisco Lindor Grade: A
AB R HR RBI SB AVG OBP SLG GP
284 45 14 32 13 .296 .356 .511 69
After missing the first month with a leg injury, Lindor came back and has been the All Star he’s always been. Not much to say about him., Aas long as he stays on the field, he’ll hit.
3B - Anthony Rendon Grade A
AB R HR RBI SB AVG OBP SLG GP
280 65 20 62 1 .304 .386 .611 75
Rendon has been my best FA acquisition, by far, maybe ever. He’s putting together a great contract year season that should net him big money IRL FA. While paying him $24.5M a year seems steep, he’s been the best 3B I’ve ever had and a huge improvement over Kyle Seager last year.
LF - Clint Frazier/Mike Yastrzemski/David Peralta Grade: C
AB R HR RBI SB AVG OBP SLG GP
191 25 11 34 1 .283 .330 .513 53
Clint was a great addition to my OF, putting up great numbers until they realized he has two left feet in the outfield. With the RL Yankees OF woes, Clint managed to get good playing time and amassing very good stats in the limited time he was up. Mike Yastrzemski was acquired to fill in when Clint was sent down, while showing some decent offense production, he’s been a sub par fill in. David Peralta was then acquired to help fill the LF hole, which he did for about 4 days before going on the IL. He should be healthy in a few weeks and his offensive production will be welcomed with open arms.
CF - Cody Bellinger Grade A+++++++++++++++++
AB R HR RBI SB AVG OBP SLG GP
318 70 30 71 8 .336 .432 .692 88
Bellinger has put up insane numbers in the first half, if he puts up even remotely close numbers in the second half, he’ll be an MVP candidate. Being ranked only slightly behind Yelich offensively, Bellinger has been a huge source of offensive production.
RF - Adam Eaton Grade B
AB R HR RBI SB AVG OBP SLG GP
324 50 6 21 7 .281 .368 .383 85
He’s been healthy, which is the most surprising and best thing he could’ve done this year for me. His production has been fine but need him to start running more or increase his launch angle. If Clint or Brinson ever come out of AAA, Eaton will be my 4th/5th OF and sub in at utility for me.
UTIL - Cesar Puello/Aledmys Diaz/John Hicks/Willians Astudillo/Mike Tauchman Grade C-
When I was able to slot in Diaz and Puello at UTIL, they put up enough offensive production to hold me over until some of my other injured guys got back. When Diaz went to the IL, along with Astudillo/Tauchman being sent to the minors my UTIL spot became a revolving door of sub par fill ins. With some of my guys returning from injury, it should make my UTIL spot more bearable.
SP - David Price Grade B+
GS QS W IP BB K SV HLD ERA WHIP
16 8 7 83.1 21 95 0 0 3.24 1.14
While missing a few starts because of injury, Price has been my best starter despite some short outings. I’ll be relying on him in the second half to help anchor my pitching staff with solid performances. I’m hoping he’s done play Fortnite as well.
SP - Tanner Roark Grade B-
GS QS W IP BB K SV HLD ERA WHIP
17 4 5 92.1 30 92 0 0 3.51 1.289
While not great he’s put up good K’s and kept his ERA/WHIP pretty good. His win total has been disappointing but the Reds don’t pack much punch offensively anymore.
SP - Mike Leake Grade B-
GS QS W IP BB K SV HLD ERA WHIP
18 11 7 114 17 83 0 0 4.32 1.238
He got blown up a few starts but overall he’s been solid as always. With 11 QS and 7 W on a bad team, not sure I could ask for much more.
SP - Jeff Nelson Grade D-
GS QS W IP BB K SV HLD ERA WHIP
3 0 0 14 14 15 0 0 8.36 2.286
The only real bright spot is his arm didn't’ fall off. Giving him some IP in the bullpen might help him out but he already landed on the IL with a minor elbow issue (fingers crossed).
SP - Reynaldo Lopez/Antonio Senzatela/Freddy Peralta/Drew Pomeranz Grade D
Inconsistent and sometimes just plain bad. Lopez, Senzatela and Peralta have been the most disappointing but every once in awhile they shine. Peralta seems to have turned it around in the bullpen so I’m hoping he continues to improve to earn a rotation start again. Pomz seems to think he’s throwing BP sometimes but it seems it’s only when I start him. I need one of them to remember how to pitch in the second half, hopefully it's one that I start.
RP - Raisel Iglesias Grade B+
GS QS W IP BB K SV HLD ERA WHIP
0 0 2 37 17 47 16 3 4.06 1.381
After Boxberger, Archie and Hirano forgot how to pitch well, Iglesias was a huge addition to my bullpen. While a few rough outings right after I acquired him, he’s settled down and has been racking up saves.
RP - Ty Buttrey Grade B+
GS QS W IP BB K SV HLD ERA WHIP
0 0 4 42 12 50 2 17 2.57 1.214
I might be too tough on him with my grade but I was hoping he was going to be the full time closer at this point. 17 Holds has been great and I need him to help stabilize my bullpen in the second half.
RP - Andrew Chaffin Grade B
GS QS W IP BB K SV HLD ERA WHIP
0 0 0 31 1140 0 14 3.41 1.295
He might be my most consistent RP I have. Already about to eclipse his holds amount from last year he’s been a steady contributor this year and should help me take the holds category most weeks.
RP - Archie Bradley/Yoshi Hirano/Brad Boxberger/Shawn Armstrong/John Brebbia Grade D-
Archie and Hirano were anchors for my bullpen last year but seem to have lost their mojo in the first half. They were slowly starting to come around right before the ASB and I need one of them to return to old form for the second half. Box was terrible (of course always when I started him), then was cut and finallythen just signed with the Nats, since they have the worst BP in the league and plucked Box from the dumpster. Armstrong was cut from the Mariners surprisingly and then picked up by the Orioles. Brebbia has been pretty solid so far.
Recap
My goal in the beginning of the year was to try to dodge the injury bug and try to be more consistent; that’s the exact opposite my team has done. I’ve had over 15 players go on the IL with others skirting the IL by sitting out multiple games. Pair that with inconsistent SP and RP and I’m glad I’m still in the playoff hunt. If I intend to take the 2nd wild card spot I’ll need better production from my pitching staff as well as some of these nagging injuries to subside for a lot of my players.
