October 2020:
Fresh off a NLCS exit, the Padres have been looking to revamp their roster going into 2021.
The team started by shipping a 6th round pick in 2022 to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for RF Nomar Mazara, a 1-year rental who was acquired to fill the role of backup OF/UT. In a subsequent move, they dealt veteran LF Justin Upton to the Washington Nationals for outfield prospect Brent Rooker. SP Jharel Cotton was waived as well.
The team will be losing key contributors to free agency:
-Kris Bryant
-Stephen Strasburg
-Jorge Soler
-Jurickson Profar
-Kurt Suzuki
November 2020:
The team sent ace starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow to the Tampa Bay Rays, in exchange for young centerfielder Victor Robles. They also flipped outfielder Nomar Mazara, with shortstop J.P. Crawford and first baseman C.J. Cron with $1MM in cash considerations to the Reds in exchange for infielder Luis Urias, first baseman Jesus Aguilar, and pitching prospect Jose De Leon.
The Padres claimed relief pitchers Anthony Misiewicz and Raul Alcantara as well as infielders Jonathan Arauz and Santiago Espinal off waivers.
In a flurry of moves, the team shored up its catching depth, they moved another starting pitcher, this time Jon Gray, to the Angels in exchange for catcher Omar Narvaez. They also sent young catcher Meibrys Viloria, with infield prospects Jonathan Arauz and Esteury Ruiz to the Cubs for established catcher Jorge Alfaro. Lastly, they sent prospects Brent Rooker and Nick Maton, reliever Tyler Kinley, and a 2022 5th to the Twins for rental pitchers Edwin Diaz and Zach Davies.
December 2020:
The Padres kicked off the month with a couple of international free agent signings, adding 20-year old Cuban pitcher Norge Vera with a $2M bonus, and 16-year old shortstop Victor Acosta with a $1M bonus. This uses the majority of the Padres 2020 IFA hard cap of $3.75M.
Free Agency Part 1:
The Padres started free agency bidding on long-time star third baseman Kris Bryant, but were quickly priced out by the New York Mets, who offered nearly $150M on a 5-year commitment. The Padres inked outfielder Tommy Pham as a way to recoup some value and shore up the team's offense. The contract was a 3-year, $20.7M dollar deal and represents the first piece of the puzzle to fall for San Diego. They also added infielder Asdrubal Cabrera on a 1-year, $2.6M commitment to provide depth to the bench and behind first baseman Jesus Aguilar and third baseman Rafael Devers.
As free agency progressed, prices of most rose beyond the level of comfort for San Diego, who sent $10M in cash considerations to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for young pitcher Adonis Medina and outfielder Raimfer Salinas, adding depth to their minor league system. They were able to agree to terms with elite shortstop Carlos Correa, but quickly flipped him in a sign-and-trade transactions, with $20M in cash considerations, in exchange for infielder Isaac Paredes and outfielder Austin Hays, both of whom represent inexpensive depth options with upside for the team. They also shipped reliever Anthony Misewicz to the rival Dodgers for cash considerations.
At the last minute, the team was able to add outfielder Joc Pederson on a five-year, $36M pact (worth $7.2M) per year. Pederson projects as the team's starting right fielder and fills the most obvious hole remaining on the roster. The team appears poised to add pitching depth, and perhaps another corner outfielder moving forward.
Free Agency Part 2:
The Padres inked reliever Tyler Duffey (who they had traded mid-season) to a three-year, $7.5M contract and acquired starting pitcher Carlos Rodon from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for prospects Santiago Espinal, Lewin de la Cruz, Brandon Valenzuela, and a 2021 6th round pick. They also claimed starting pitcher Chris Flexen off waivers, and sent reliever Buck Farmer to the Orioles in exchange for $1.5M. These moves bolster the Padres pitching depth. They are rumored to still be in the mix to add another pitcher via free agency, with about $5M available to spend.
In a final move, the team grabbed reliever José Alvarado on a five-year, $20 million dollar contract. This represents the largest deal committed to a reliever for the team since Craig Kimbrel's unsuccessful five-year, $38 million dollar contract. Between Alvarado and Duffey, the team committed $27.5 million towards revamping a bullpen that was largely average last season. Alvarado and Duffey will join new acquisition Edwin Diaz, mid-season acquisition Emilio Pagán, homegrown talent Gregory Soto (Rule V draft), and holdover Nick Anderson.
March 2021:
Fresh off spring training injuries to starting pitchers Framber Valdez and Miles Mikolas, the team responded by adding pitchers Adrian Morejon and Aaron Sanchez from the Rockies in exchange for infielder Isaac Paredes and pitching prospect Norge Vera.
May 2021:
The Padres, a little late, fixed their biggest weakness by adding right fielder Aaron Judge (with pitching prospects Corbin Martin, Elvin Rodriguez, and Luis Perales) in exchange for starter Kenta Maeda, outfielder Tommy Pham, and top pitching prospect Hunter Greene.
July 2021:
The Padres flipped prospect Elvin Rodriguez (acquired in the Judge deal) with a 2021 5th in exchange for struggling, young pitcher Logan Allen, who will provide some short term depth to the rotation with longer term upside. They followed up with a blockbuster, acquiring superstar shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. along with outfielders Eloy Jimenez and Nick Senzel, pitching prospect Brailyn Marquez, and three mid-round draft picks for long-tenured shortstop Tim Anderson, outfielder Aaron Judge, third baseman Rafael Devers, starting pitchers Carlos Rodon, Zach Davies, and Miles Mikolas, and relievers Tyler Duffey and Paul Fry.
They also flipped a 2022 4th acquired in the Tatis deal along with Jose Martinez in exchange for rental starter Andrew Heaney, in a move to try and replenish depth lost in the Tatis deal. They also inked pitchers Wily Peralta, Dominic Leone and Paul Sewald to short-term contracts.
The Padres splashed, acquiring starting pitcher Zack Greinke (and cash considerations) in exchange for young pitcher Corbin Martin and 2nd round pick. They will continue to focus in coming days on filling the offensive holes left by Aaron Judge and Rafael Devers.
The Padres continued their trend of adding depth by acquiring rental infielder/outfielder Jace Peterson from the Astros in a 3-way deal that sent reliever Jose De Leon to Cleveland.
They shipped young outfielders Austin Hays and Jairo Pomares to the Yankees for starter Blake Snell, adding depth to a rotation that now features five top starting pitchers (Cole, Greinke, Snell, Valdez, Urias) and a slew of young pitchers (Quantrill, McKenzie, Allen, Sheffield) and solid depth (Heaney, Sanchez). The team still needs to add to its offense to replace Judge and Devers.
August 2021:
The Padres filled their center field hole with Trent Grisham in exchange for struggling outfielder Victor Robles, pitcher Cal Quantrill and prospects Miguel Vargas and Charlie Aquino. Shortly after, they sent struggling starting pitcher Erick Fedde to the Rangers for a 4th round pick. They flipped that 4th and a 2022 3rd to the White Sox for veteran first baseman Carlos Santana, who will fill a DH role for the club.
They sent recent free agent signee Wily Peralta to the Twins in exchange for reliever Garrett Cleavinger, adding some longer term depth to a team that has gone through several short term recent moves. They made a second move with the Twins, moving four prospects (Adonis Medina, Raimfer Salinas, Jaswel De Los Santos, and Jose King) to acquire infielder Yandy Diaz.
Trade Deadline 2021:
Padres acquire 2B/3B/SS Gio Urshela for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th
Padres acquire 2B/3B Jed Lowrie for 5th and 6th
Padres acquire 2B/LF/CF/RF Jurickson Profar for 7th
Padres acquire SP Lance McCullers, SP Eduardo Rodriguez, 1B Dominic Smith for SP Zack Greinke, C Keibert Ruiz, and 1B Carlos Santana
Padres acquire SP Antonio Senzatela and 3rd for 1B Dominic Smith
December 2021:
The Padres claimed starting pitcher Nick Martinez and claimed/flipped pitcher Janson Junk for a 2022 7th round pick and moved $5.5mm in cash for two 2nd round rV picks. They proceeded to move catcher Jorge Alfaro and outfielder Leody Taveras to the Red Sox for $12.5mm in cash and prospects Joey Cantillo, Robert Gasser, Ismael Mena, Grae Kessinger, and Josh Wolf. They also moved RP Dominic Leone and the recently acquired 7th for prospect Aaron Schunk and moved third baseman Yandy Diaz for pitcher Luke Weaver and prospects Brayan Medina and Junior Perez (and flipped Weaver to the Cubs for a 3rd round pick and prospect Logan Davidson). The team continues to focus on cutting salary and adding prospect depth.
January 2021:
The Padres kicked off the new year by saying farewell to long time ace Gerrit Cole, sending him to the Diamondbacks with infielder Gio Urshela and catcher Omar Narvaez in exchange for pitchers Mike Soroka and Dinelson Lamet, and prospects Asa Lacy, Garrett Mitchell, and Rece Hinds. They also moved a rV 2nd for prospects Cristian Feliz and Victor Mesia. The farm is restocked and the Padres will go into FA with needs at RF, 3B, SS, and/or C and about $45mm in dry powder to spend.
Free Agency 2021:
Amidst free agency, the Padres sent INF/OF Jurickson Profar to the Reds in exchange for rental SP Zack Grienke (who was acquired and flipped at the deadline). This eats up about ~$4m in short term dollars but allows the team to add some SP depth. They continue to pursue several free agents.
1/4: The Padres appear close to inking outfielder Gregory Polanco to provide depth on the bench after several trades. They remain interested in several higher profile free agents but have not had a bid succeed yet.
1/5: The Padres have inked outfielder Gregory Polanco (5 years @ $600k per) but he will be out for at least the first season. They also signed shortstop Orlando Arcia (4 years @ $900k per) to provide bench depth after losing several hitters via trade over the last two weeks.
Catcher Yasmani Grandal signed a 5-year contract worth $9m per season, joining an already powerful (but not deep offense) and filling in the catcher position which had been left empty after trades of Omar Narvaez and Jorge Alfaro.
1/6: A little past midnight, the Padres struck again with their third biggest free agent contract (behind Johnny Cueto and recently departed Gerrit Cole) in GM Noah Eli's history, inking outfielder Joey Gallo to a 5-year contract worth $85mm. With only ~$10mm in cap space after the acquisition of Zack Grienke and signing Gallo and Grandal, the Padres appear to be done adding with the exception of bench depth.
1/7: The Padres inked infielder Jose Peraza (5 years @ $800k per) and outfielder Khris Davis (2 years @ $600k per) as bench depth. They pursued first baseman Yuli Gurriel and infielder Jace Peterson to be later outbid. They have shown interest in adding Gurriel, Peterson, or catcher Gary Sanchez.
1/19: With pitchers FA open and prices already high, the Padres inked reliever Jake McGee to a relatively inexpensive 3 year contract at $3m per annum. He will cheaply replace Edwin Diaz, lost to free agency, and supplement a solid Padres bullpen.
1/20: The Padres signed starting pitcher Matt Harvey on a three year contract worth $500k per season to provide depth and a "lottery ticket" option.
The Padres sent $2mm in cash and pitching prospect Logan Shore to the Red Sox in exchange for catcher Elias Diaz who will provide depth behind newly signed top catcher Yasmani Grandal.
February 2022:
The Padres shipped prospect Josh Wolf to the Brewers in exchange for a 2nd round pick.
May 2022:
The Padres, in an attempt to boost a struggling and injured team, claimed reliever Jose Ruiz off waivers and shipped another reliever, Emilio Pagan, to the Reds for third baseman J.D. Davis. They also inked relievers Luis Garcia (1 year @ $500k) and Matt Moore (2 years @ $500k) to inexpensive deals and claimed another reliever, Kyne Nelson, off waivers. The team still seems inclined to add a shortstop, some starting pitching depth, and potentially an outfielder.
The team flipped recent signee Matt Moore, $500k, and their first round rV for the Orioles rV 1st and 2nd. They then moved shortstop prospect Rece Hinds and a 3rd to the Nationals for Santiago Espinal.
June 2022:
The Padres quietly moved first baseman Jesus Aguilar to the Royals in exchange for prospects Justin Lange and Adonis Medina. The move frees up a bit of salary and adds some minor league depth.
August 2022:
The Padres sent a second round pick to the Rays for reliever Alex Lange, who has long-term control.
The Padres seem to be in selling mode. They shipped rental reliever Luis Garcia to the Cubs for a 2nd round rV pick. They also sent ace starter Lance McCullers (and picked up ~$8mm of his deal next year) for shortstop prospects Cole Young and Ricardo Cabrera as well as a rV 1st, giving the Padres some minor league depth going into the offseason.
In an interesting move, the team traded struggling reliever Dinelson Lamet and young prospect Asa Lacy to the Reds in exchange for injured starting pitcher Casey Mize. They also sent outfielder Nick Senzel to the Nationals in exchange for pitching prospect Cole Wilcox and a 2024 5th.
