Twas the night before free agents and all through the league, teams were deciding hmm, what do I need?
Relief pitchers, slant rhyme? This is the article you never thought you needed. We’re going to predict the landing spots of the 10 best relievers on the Free Agency market ahead of Monday’s embargo. I won’t predict contracts because 1. Who wants to read about $1 million deals and 2. That part of the process is not my expertise. Without further ado, the top 10 free agent relief pitchers and their predicted landing spots.
Kenley Jansen - No relievers? No problem. Pittsburgh being in one Trevor Story makes me believe they’re willing to pay for investments. Jansen is the big-name investment I think Pittsburgh goes in on. Can always flip him in a deal, so there is some versatility. Prediction: Pirates.
Ryan Pressly - Tampa Bay needs to add major league guys. Why does it feel like Will will will this guy onto his team? Not much cash left for his team, but figure that out later? Prediction: Rays.
Kendall Graveman - The Mariners are competing. Graveman seems like the type of guy our favorable fanatic will go after. Prediction: Mariners.
Edwin Diaz - The Astros have a lot of cap and have already spent some cap on relievers. Could they add another? Sure. Diaz seems like a good fit. Will get some saves to add to the duo of Colome and Britton. Prediction: Astros.
Hector Neris - Washington has money to play with. Neris isn’t a top three option, but I do like the stability he could bring to this team’s bullpen choices. Prediction: Nationals.
Trevor May - Colorado has a lot of cap to spend and have bought in on free agent relievers in the past. Predicting that that continues in the new regime. Prediction: Colorado.
Ian Kennedy - The Blue Jays need a closer and Kennedy is probably the worst of this group of closers, so probably will come cheap. Blue Jays get some saves, short money, seems like a fit. Prediction: Blue Jays.
Jake McGee - McGee will get some saves, although his role is far from secured. The Orioles have three pitchers and this guy seems like a good buy low, sell high type pitcher, where I could see him getting short money but flipped for some prospects at the deadline if he succeeds. Prediction: Orioles.
Taylor Rogers - For much of the same reasons above, I think Colorado could target the likings of Rogers. Prediction: Rockies.
Drew Pomeranz - Pomeranz is not a closer, that could get some saves, but could also be really bad and injured and does anything about Pomeranz actually excite anyone, yet, he’s still solid as a reliever and is this enough of a run-on sentence for everyone or should it be longer? Prediction: Giants.
