November 2022:
The Padres opened up with a couple of moves, sending fringe pitcher Logan Allen to the Reds for DSL catching prospect Luis Meza and sending two first round picks in 2024 to the Pirates for $27mm in order to prepare for free agency and create some financial flexibility.
In their first big move of the offseason, the team acquired SP Marcus Stroman from the Mariners in exchange for two 2nd round picks and a 4th round pick in 2024, to provide some top of the rotation depth after losing ace pitcher Framber Valdez at the deadline.
They also moved $5mm in cash to the Dodgers in exchange for catcher Francisco Mejia (to pair with Austin Nola), and sent reliever Enyel De Los Santos with prospects Logan Davidson and Yolbert Sanchez to the Cardinals for outfielder Manuel Margot and cash considerations.
December 2022:
They flipped outfielder Manuel Margot to the Braves for former MVP Christian Yelich and cash considerations, taking a risk on a once superstar. They also swapped outfielder Trent Grisham for rental ace Tyler Glasnow.
In free agency, the team inked center fielder Brandon Nimmo to a five-year contract worth $14.5mm per season and third baseman Gio Urshela to a 4-year deal worth $7mm per year.
January 2023:
The Padres have been relatively quiet since December, but inked reliever Drew Pomeranz to a 3-year contract, worth $500k.
March 2023:
The Padres sent OF prospect Jaison Chourio, infielder Orlando Arcia, prospect Justin Wrobleski, and pitcher James Paxton to the Rays for rental SP Blake Snell and SS prospect Oswaldo Osorio.
They also acquired slugging outfielder Nick Castellanos from the Brewers for prospects Victor Acosta and Luis Perales.
May 2023:
The Padres acquired first baseman Rowdy Tellez from the White Sox for pitching prospect Robert Gasser and two third round picks.
June 2023:
The team added superstar catcher Wilson Contreras, reliever Tanner Scott, and cash for injured outfielder Garrett Mitchell, reliever Jose Ruiz, and prospects Henry Baez and Cristian Feliz. This fills a long open hole at catcher for the Padres.
August 2023:
The Padres made a flurry of moves at the trade deadline, summarized below:
November 2023:
The Padres kicked off the offseason having lost several players to free agency including Blake Snell, Julio Urias, Tyler Glasnow, and mid-season acquisitions Sonny Gray, Jeff McNeill, and Yu Darvish. They sent highly paid star outfielder Christian Yelich to the Blue Jays for Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and flipped him with stalwart Nick Castellanos and $8mm for young outfielders Steven Kwan and Leody Taveras. They also moved prospects Wilmer Flores and Joey Cantillo to the Astros for catcher Alejandro Kirk and reliever Jorge Lopez. They then flipped infielder Santiago Espinal and reliever Luis Ortiz to the Braves for reliever Jose LeClerc and cash considerations.
December 2023:
The Padres took a flier on outfielder Taylor Trammell from the Dodgers, acquiring him for a 6th round pick. They also sent reliever Victor Gonzalez to the Twins for a 4th round pick and cash considerations.
January 2024:
The Padres kicked off the new year in a big way, first acquiring starting pitcher Kutter Crawford from the Nationals for prospects Ricardo Cabrera and Jack Brannigan as well as a 4th round pick. They also added shortstop Gavin Lux and cash considerations from the Giants in exchange for prospects Cole Young, Brailyn Marquez, and first baseman rental Rowdy Tellez. They also moved outfielder Brandon Nimmo to the Angels for pick 1.3 and shipped $14mm in cash (cash savings from dropping Nimmo) to the A's for their 2025 1st.
Free Agency 2024:
February/March 2024:
After a very active IFA, the Padres made a few moves. They sent Jhoancarlos Lara (their rV 1st rounder) and their 2nd round rV pick to the Phillies for Jairo Iriarte, sent pitcher Joey Wentz and infielder Grae Kessinger to the Astros for a 3rd and 6th, and flipped Iriarte and the third for shortstop/center fielder Tommy Edman. Edman will start in center field but could shift to an infield role with any injuries. They also inked pitchers Noah Syndergaard and Jake Odorizzi to deals at the league minimum as depth.
