Baltimore Orioles: Hitting outside of Granderson is average. They have a very strong bullpen, and good rotation. Losing Hamels and Kendrick to FA hurts the team a lot, but have enough cap space to go after them or other good pieces in FA. They have few good prospects, including Yonder Alonso, but it is not a particularly deep farm.
Boston Red Sox: The Red Sox Have an excellent MLB roster. With Longo, Hamilton, and Andrus, the Red Sox have a few great players. They support the lineup with good role players and excellent young talent in Wieters and Ackley. Although their rotation doesn’t necessarily have a true ace, top to bottom it is very good, starting with great young pitcher Max Scherzer, and potential in Chris Sale. Their bullpen is also very strong, with Storen, Fuentes, and Motte. There are some good prospects, but the team just doesn’t have very many to begin with.
New York Yankees: Looking at the Yankees roster, I think that all they need to do is fill their holes in the lineup with decent players. They already have Lester and Wainwright in a good rotation. Getting rid of Crawford was huge for them, but unfortunately they lost Jaime Garcia and Franklin Morales as well in a different deal. The additions of Carlos Quentin, David Pauley, and David Freese help make up for the losses. Now that they are under the cap, they can potentially make a few FA signings. If they can fill what they need to fill well, they can be very competitive this season and beyond if some of their prospects can contribute in the future.
Tampa Bay Rays: The first thing that comes to mind for me when I see this roster is “young.” Strasburg, Bourn, Zimmerman, and Jered Weaver lead a team full of potential. They have a good amount of money to spend in FA (about half of the salary cap) and definitely have some standout prospects for the future, but the weak link is the bullpen. If they can use their money wisely in the offseason, they could have a very good team.
Toronto Blue Jays: While having many solid players such as Ervin Santana and Delmon Young. The Blue Jays are missing the top-notch players that will take them to the next level. I would not be surprised if no one makes the All-Star game this season, and they don’t have the cap room to go after any big names in the offseason. Their MiLB roster is no better than average, so I don’t see them being a major contender anytime soon.
AL EAST 2012 SEASON OVERVIEW: Overall, the AL East, similar to in the MLB, has a few very good teams. The Yankees and Red Sox both look very good, and the Rays are not very far behind. The Orioles and Blue Jays are far from terrible, but not likely to win the division. My AL East Prediction is Boston in 1st, New York in 2nd, Tampa in 3rd, Baltimore in 4th, and Toronto in 5th.
