The San Diego Padres have announced a trade with the Texas Rangers. The Rangers acquired the Padres first round selection in the 2016 draft, while the Padres acquired infielder Jed Lowrie and catcher Yasmani Grandal. The Padres still hold three more first round selections in the 2016 draft's first round, so they took advantage of a strength. Grandal and Lowrie fill two holes for the Padres in one trade, allowing for the club to begin to have a major league lineup come opening day.
C Yasmani Grandal 1B Juan Francisco 2B Jed Lowrie SS Jose Iglesias LF Dustin Ackley CF Bryce Harper
The team is still interested in adding a corner infielder, an outfielder, and a DH. If the opportunity arises, the team would upgrade their shortstop and first base positions. A second baseman would also make sense, because the team could just move Lowrie to shortstop. The team is also expected to add at least one free agent starting pitcher, but could add two. With 23 million dollars to spend, the Padres expect to fill some holes. Veteran starting pitcher Tim Lincecum could be released in order to free up cap space to acquire more free agents. Right now, the rotation does not look great, but it is a major improvement on the previous regime's attempt at fielding a ball-club.

The team is rumored to have serious interest in pitcher Rick Porcello, as well as outfielder Colby Rasmus.

The Padres have acquired starting pitcher Tyson Ross for a cash payment of nineteen million dollars and starting pitcher Sean Nolin. They also announced the free agent signing of reliever Luke Gregerson, to a 2-year contract worth two million dollars a season. The moves improved a pitching staff that was highlighted by Rick Porcello and Brett Anderson. Ross will slot into the top of the rotation, while Gregerson will close for San Diego. The deals bring two pieces that will help next season, and during the 2016 season.
The Padres have also showed heavy interest in catcher Matt Wieters before he signed with Detroit, and Pablo Sandoval, though both signings are now highly unlikely. The team appears to be wanting depth in the bullpen and on offense.

The Padres have made their second move of the day, inking reliever Pat Neshek to a two-year deal worth 500k a season. Neshek was an all-star last season, pitching in 70 games to a 1.87 ERA with six saves.

The Padres have announced the signing of first baseman and outfielder Steve Pearce to a three year contract worth 5.5 million dollars a season. Pearce hit 21 home runs in 338 at bats last season, posting a .293 batting average. Pearce and Curtis Granderson are so far the only legitimate hitters on a team that has not finished at or over .500 for the last 4 seasons. Pearce is eligible as both a left-fielder and a first baseman.
The team is still interested in adding to the offense, showing interest in players like Nick Hundley and Omar Infante as free agents, but the team will likely spend the next few days shoring up the starting rotation and bullpen. The team could pursure veteran third baseman Aramis Ramirez or designated hitter David Ortiz, but both additions would appear unlikely. Pearce figures to lead the group of free agent signs to fix the offense.

The Padres have announced two signings: closer Joaquin Benoit and catcher Nick Hundley. Hundley will provide depth behind the plate, hopefully mixing at bats with Caleb Joseph, Andrew Susac, and James McCann at catcher. He signed a one year contract worth just over a million dollars. Benoit signed a two year deal that was worth just over 2.5 million dollars. He will add another strong piece to a bullpen that already features Luke Gregerson, Pat Neshek, and Shawn Tolleson.

The San Diego Padres appear to have finished their ventures on the free agent market, though the team still has slight interest in second baseman Omar Infante.
Free Agent Signings: SP Rick Porcello SP Brett Anderson CF Cameron Maybin RF Curtis Granderson RF Ichiro Suzuki RP Luke Gregerson RP Pat Neshek 1B Steve Pearce RP Joaquin Benoit C Nick Hundley
The team appears likely to add multiple offensive pieces, as well as a young starting pitcher, to a team that will likely see a .500 record, and a 4th or 5th place finish. With luck, the team could finish higher, but at this point, it seems highly unlikely. The team is missing a SS, a 3B, and a LF.

The Padres have announced the signings of two veteran starting pitchers, who are expected to fill the #3 and #4 slots in the starting rotation. Charlie Morton, 31, signed a two year contract worth one million dollars, while Ubaldo Jimenez, also 31, signed a two year contract worth four million dollars. Morton is recovering from right hip surgery, and is expected to miss the first two or three starts of the season. Jimenez is coming off a horrific season, but is a rebound candidate. In 2013 he went 13-9 with a 3.30 ERA and 194 strikeouts.
SP Rick Porcello SP Brett Anderson SP Ubaldo Jimenez SP Charlie Morton SP Shane Greene
The team lost some starting pitching depth when Masahiro Tanaka and Roenis Elias were dealt to the Diamondbacks and the Orioles, respectively. The additions of Morton and Jimenez should allow the team to regain some of the depth lost in those moves. Chris Bassitt, Jacob Turner, Rafael Montero, and Brandon Finnegan are also rotation candidates.

The Padres have capped off a massive overhaul of their major league roster with the addition of starting pitcher Johnny Cueto, inking the veteran starting pitcher to a five year contract, worth 142.5 million dollars. The deal pays Cueto 28.5 million dollars annually, and slides into a rotation that already includes David Price, Yu Darvish, and fellow newly signed free agent Yovani Gallardo. Alex Wood, J.A. Happ, Jared Cosart, and Hyun-Jin Ryu round out the rotation. Cueto, 30, represents a strong addition to an already strong rotation, but leaves questions about a future salary obligation (nearly 60M annually committed to Cueto and Price over next five seasons) and the state of the team's offense. The team recently sent starting pitcher Jimmy Nelson to the Rangers in exchange for shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, dealing from an area of depth to strengthen their middle infield. This move makes incumbent shortstop Andrelton Simmons expendable, possibly to a team in need of a shortstop. This marks the biggest free agent signing made under GM Noah Eli. Last offseason, Rick Porcello was signed to a five year contract worth 55 million dollars, which exactly mirrored their commitment to Yovani Gallardo.
