Javier Guerra, SS, Grade B: Age 20, acquired from Red Sox in Craig Kimbrel deal, hit .279/.329/.449 with 15 homers, 30 walks, 112 strikeouts in 434 at-bats in Low-A; entered 2015 with good field/weak bat reputation but came up with a big power surge; glove sharp at shortstop, some say spectacular; I think the power burst is real but aggressive approach and questionable strike zone judgment are issues. You can make a case for the number one spot.
Christin Stewart, OF, Grade B: Age 22, first round pick from University of Tennessee in 2015, hit .285/.372/.508 with 10 homers, 26 walks, 68 strikeouts in 256 at-bats in pro debut between GCL, NYP, and Midwest League. Power is genuine in my view, mixed with solid pure hitting skills. Defense not great but should be okay in left field if he hits as expected. Best bat in the system by far.
Tom Murphy, C, Grade B/B-: Age 24, hit .256/.314/.490 with 20 homers, 28 walks, 123 strikeouts in 394 at-bats in high minors, then .257/.333/.543 with three homers, four walks, 10 strikeouts in 35 big league at-bats. I think the big league numbers, despite their small sample size, are what we should expect. Huge power, won’t hit for high averages, defense good-enough, think Mike Napoli bat with fewer walks (for now, I think he has it in him to improve his plate discipline eventually).
Marco Gonzales, LHP, Grade B-: Age 24, posted 5.45 ERA with 51/24 K/BB in 69 innings in Triple-A, 91 hits, got killed in one major league start, PCL sources reported that his stuff was down compared to 2014, velocity off and breaking stuff lacked crispness, no surprise given that he was on the DL with shoulder problems for much of the year. Surgery was avoided. If healthy he is a classic strike-throwing four starter but shoulder stuff is scary.
Josh Morgan, INF, Grade B-/C+: Age 20, hit .288/.385/.362 with 45 walks, 53 strikeouts in 351 at-bats in Low-A. Excellent feel for hitting, strong plate discipline, makes contact, solid defender at second and third base. Main question is power development or lack thereof. Too bad you can’t graft his approach onto Beras’ body.
Tony Zych, RHP, Grade C+: Age 25, posted 2.98 ERA with 55/8 K/BB in 48 innings in Double-A/Triple-A; 2.45 ERA with 24/3 K/BB in 18 innings in majors, former prospect in Cubs system struggled with Chicago but was much more effective after being sold to Seattle; fastball in mid-90s, plus slider, will be effective as long as he throws strikes.
Austin Wilson, OF, Grade C+: Age 24, hit .239/.342/.374 with 10 homers, 31 walks, 115 strikeouts in 380 at-bats in High-A. Looks bad, but hit great in second half: .290/.393/.452, big offensive potential in 6-4, 250 body but size leads to contact issues; can he make adjustments in Double-A?
Bryan Hudson, LHP, Grade C+: Age 18, huge 6-8 lefty from Illinois high school drafted in third round in 2015, just getting started, currently throws 86-92 but heat should improve in time, already has a strong curveball. High ceiling.
Max Wotell, LHP, Grade C+/C: Age 19, third round pick from North Carolina high school this year, posted 2.53 ERA with 16/9 K/BB in 11 innings in rookie ball. Long way off, but projectable type that the Mets have had good luck with in the past.
Jhoan Urena, 3B, Grade C+/C: Age 21, hit disappointing .222/.274/.302 between High-A and rookie ball rehab, missed much of season with a wrist injury and hit very poorly after returning. Was much better when healthy in 2014 (.300/.356/.431 in NY-P). Could rebound.
